I was all set to delete the United States v. Mexico game from my Tivo when I decided I wanted to see Altidore’s goal just one more time. Before I knew it I was watching the entire game, breaking it down, and dissecting the U.S. play. The game was thoroughly entertaining and a great spectacle of football. However, as I watched Mexico, at times, clinically pass right around the U.S. midfield one thing was readily apparent. The U.S. does not pass the ball well and if they want to progress as a footballing nation and become a true power, improving their passing must be priority number one.

Bill Shankly once said “football is a simple game based on the giving and taking of passes, of controlling the ball and of making yourself available to receive a pass. It is terribly simple.” Such a simple statement boils football down (with the exception of shooting) to four things: making a pass, receiving a pass, controlling possession, and getting open. And they are all things that the U.S. does poorly against quality opposition. The U.S. has several problems with their overall passing including inaccurate passing, lack of movement, and poor touch.
