Derrick White - Dear ESPN Less is More |
Derrick White Dear ESPN: Less is More After watching ESPN's broadcast of the LA Galaxy v. Chelsea game where David Beckham made his first appearance, it was never more apparent that ESPN’s soccer broadcasts do not enhance the game of soccer, but rather, distract from game and fail to help the new fan understand the game. ESPN needs to learn one lesson about soccer broadcasting: Less is more. ESPN has taken some positive steps. ESPN is generally showing more games. They are broadcasting some games in high definition. Lastly, they have added Tommy Smyth to the booth. The problem though is in their zeal to stamp their brand on the broadcast they distract from the game and prevent new viewers from understanding the game. Saturday's, essentially, David Beckham v. Chelsea game was complete overkill and a prime example of these problems that are specific to most of ESPN’s MLS broadcasts.

 Peter Brown
Gordon Strachan as he often does, spoke a mouthful with very few words last Wednesday, prior to Celtic’s match up with MLS all-stars when he quipped, "there's this misconception that everybody in Europe thinks this is not a good league," Strachan said. "Whoever's opinion that is, it's the wrong opinion, because when I speak to coaches and players, everybody has a high opinion of American soccer, the MLS, American players. We actually think it's very, very good indeed. It's only the uneducated in football who make comments like that." Same thing that former Liverpool-great, and current Rev’s manager Steve Nicol has been saying for the past couple of years, as well as one-time Northern Ireland International and now manager of fc Dallas Steve Morrow will say to anyone who will listen. |
